You might expect some ancient king to have built a giant tombstone to himself, and many of them did make sure monuments went up recording all their achievements. But those monuments usually weren’t the actual slab over their grave. The largest tombstone that was not a statue or otherwise some sort of monument, may have belonged to one Henry Scarlett of Upton, Georgia. While no records of his grave appear to exist today, from 1888 (when he was supposedly buried) until about 1890, his huge tombstone was covered by a dozen major newspapers including the New York Times. Considering the fact that these same newspapers were reporting bat-men living on the moon and UFO sightings around the same time, we do have to take the story with a grain of salt about the size of his alleged gravestone. However, if it did exist today, it would be hard to miss, as Scarlett apparently selected a mound of granite that was 100 feet by 250 feet and had it professionally engraved with his vital information (minus his date of death) while still alive. Instead of trying to move the huge stone, he had a tomb excavated underneath it. Locals reported that Scarlett had always been a bit weird and that, while he donated a lot of money to charity and other good causes, he lived like a hermit. Some attributed this to a woman breaking his heart in his youth. If true, this adds a real Freudian touch to the giant rock; after a life of celibacy his balls must have felt that large.
